With the largest population of bears in the world, we had great opportunities to see these wild animals up close against breathtaking landscapes as a backdrop in Katmai National Park, Alaska! In early summer, the bears leave their dens and come to this area for the breeding season and to feed on the grasses that sprout in the spring. We saw the bears as close as 50 yards! Glaciers begin in clouds such as these in the Chugach Mountains. Over time, falling snow piles up in mountain recesses, and ever so slowly the weight of accumulating snow compact lower layers into dense ice. When the ice becomes thick enough, it starts to remove downhill. Shot made on a flight from Anchorage to Amsterdam (Nikon D3000).
