Glacier Bay : During a flightseeing tour over Glacier Bay NP we had a dramatic view at the 12-mile-long John Hopkins Glacier. The glaciers seen here today are remnants of a general ice advance- the Little Ice Age- that began about 4,000 years ago. In 1890, geologist Harry Fielding Reid discovered the glacier and proudly named it toe John Hopkins, a philanthropist and founder of the eponymous university and hospital. He also named the smaller glacier on the left to Daniel Coit Gilman, the first president of the university. For more backgroundstories and Alaska webgalleries: www.michelhammann-photography.com

Not in a City : The waters outside Valdez are filled with various types of whales. Although no tour company can guarantee a sighting, it would be a shame not to try. And sometimes you beat the beauty of a jumping humpback whale. They make the Prince William Sound a part of their annual summer trek. Humpbacks ar baleen feeders, consuming nearly a ton of food a day. Humpbacks average 45 feet and weigh 35-40 tons. Shot made with Nikon D3000/300 mm tele lens. Not in a city : The early light of a new dawn grows stronger while the aurora fades into memory as seen from our Twelve-Mile Summit camp March 29, 2008 about 80 miles northeast of Fairbanks. I retired to my sleeping bag for a few short hours and woke to a blazing sun. Our little windbreak had turned into a great reflector and over our morning coffee we soon realized that we would surely fry in the intensified sunlight if we stayed too long. It was time to go so after packing our strung-out gear we started our three-day journey back to Homer. Copyright (c) Dennis C.
